Guaranteed departure: Karpathian Mountains for adventure bikes

TRAVEL IS DEADLY… FOR PREJUDICES!

Mark Twain’s expression is particularly fitting for Romania: A country full of friendly people and enormous potential, but little known in the world at large and weighed down by many prejudices.

It is an open secret: Romania is an excellent destination for passionate adventure motor bikers.

Approximately 40% of Romania’s roads are not yet paved. Behind just about every road exit lies another gravel path! We invite you to discover this beautiful country away from the main roads. Gravel, forest paths, and endless winding roads await you. Romania consists of equal parts flatland, hills, and mountains – which guarantees an exciting degree of variety! Medieval-era fortified churches, picturesque villages from centuries past, breathtaking landscapes, welcoming people, and mouth-watering culinary dishes await you on this tour!

Tour data: From/to Oradea approximately 800 to 1000 km, depending on the wishes of the group. Difficulty grade: easy to medium, suitable for off-road beginners. For clubs or otherwise collectively organized groups: For specifically booked tours the difficulty grade can be raised and adjusted to the overall skill-level of the group.

Our exclusive itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Oradea

Independent arrival of the group participants in the Romanian city of Oradea, close to the Hungarian border crossing of Artand, approximately 500 km from Vienna. Individuals arriving with a car and trailer can park them at the hotel (for a daily fee) for the entirety of the tour. During the first group dinner you will get to know your guide and all the other participants, together building the anticipation for the exciting upcoming trip. Overnight accommodation in Oradea, including dinner and breakfast.

Day 2: Oradea – Marisel (150 km)

Your journey into the West Carpathians begins today. The gentle rolling hills of Transylvania, filled with many small villages, already create a first impression of the Romanian countryside that you will discover and traverse over the coming days. The overnight accommodation for the next 4 nights will be in one of the area’s typical ‘rustic cabin of the upper middle class variety’, with breakfast and dinner included every day. Your luggage will be brought from Oradea to Marisel during the day and will already await you upon your arrival.

Days 3, 4, and 5: Day trips in the West Carpathians

Three very varied days await you: Each day after breakfast you will head out on to the chosen track for the day, carefully selected by our experienced team. Later in the afternoon you will return to your enchanting ‘cabin’, where the most delicious house-made culinary specialties await you. During these three days, among other things, you will visit the iron ore mountains of Romania. The path will take you past summer villages and isolated huts, which are inhabited by shepherds and their families for only a few months each year. On another day you will reach the highest point of the West Carpathians, where one of the most important weather stations of the country is located. The journey continues over a rally track, built by one of Romania’s most famous motor bikers, which you will also be able to try out for yourself. Last but not least, in one of those days you will also visit Romania’s most recent entry to the UNESCO World Heritage list: In 2021 the former mining area of Rosia Montana was added to this precious list. Here you will enjoy the unforgettable experience of being able to look back upon 2000 years of gold mining history, going as far back as the Romans building the first mines in their newly conquered province. The daily distances covered fluctuate, depending on the wishes and capabilities of the group, between 100 and 150 km. Upon special request it can also be a bit more or less.

Day 6: Marisel – Oradea (150 km)

After a few extraordinary days in the West Carpathians your guide will navigate you back to the starting point of the tour. But even along this trip a last few “tasty morsels” will be included in the program, in the form of exciting tracks along two mountain lakes. Later in the afternoon you will at last return to Oradea, Transylvania’s most impressive art nouveau city, where we will have our final overnight accommodation with dinner and breakfast.

Day 7: Journey home

Unfortunately, today the time has come to say goodbye to your newly-won friends. With many happy memories packed among your luggage the journey home can begin. Your guide will accompany you until the Romanian-Hungarian border, from where you will continue independently or together with other members of the group heading in the same direction. End of the tour.

Characteristics of the tour: The tour is suitable for bikers who already have some experience driving on narrow and windy mountain roads and have their adventure bikes under solid control in such situations. Adventure bikes of all sizes are welcome on this tour. The use of, at a minimum, road and off-road Allround tires is mandatory, and particularly in wet weather conditions terrain-oriented tires (ex. TKC 80, K 60 Scout) are an enormous advantage. This tour is not appropriate for pure street motorbikes or motorbikes equipped purely with street tires! The possibility of taking a passenger along on the bike exists, but is not recommended.

An open understanding among motor bikers:

On guided motorbike tours with one’s own bike, drivers from many different countries and with different bikes meet to undertake a common journey. Just as there will be a wild variety among the various participants, the same will be the case for the range of motorbikes, something that is bound to bring about a fun and interesting journey. As with all group activities in general, this trip requires a certain team spirit and willingness of the individual to integrate with the group, so that everyone can enjoy the journey and the vacation.
